December is a month that reminds me of music.  To be honest, every month reminds me of music!  I often think that if life had a soundtrack, it would enhance the day-to-day experience!  Imagine what the playlist of our students would be?  I wonder if they have "Les Mis" songs still rattling around in their brains?  All of our sports teams warm up to music and most of the teams have those special songs that get them motivated.  Recently I was in a math class where classical music was playing softly in the background.  At any given time, a variety of music with a strong downbeat can be heard emanating from our gyms as our Wellness students actively engage in class.  Where would we be without music?  As Plato explains, "...rhythm and harmony find their way into the inward places of the soul."

So join us on December 19th for our annual Community Carol Sing!  If you have never attended this event designed to bring all of our families together for an evening filled with music and good cheer, you are in for a treat!  We meet at 6:30pm in the auditorium and sing until our voices tire (or until the student musicians have to leave and do their homework).  And join me in congratulating our record number of students who have qualified for this year's CME All-State Music Festival!

We are grateful for the value our supportive community places on the arts.  Yes, we are a strong academic high school. And we are also a community that recognizes the whole child.  We understand that not every child walks to the same beat and we find a place for that child to fit into the fabric of what we proudly call Joel Barlow High School.

Happy Holidays and Best Wishes for the New Year.

Be well.
