Tips to Stay Hydrated

Tips to Stay Hydrated During the School Year

Here are some tips to help you make sure your students are hydrated and learning:

  •  Make sure they drink a glass of water before heading off to school.
  •  Have your student bring an easily-closed, reusable water bottle to keep at his/her desk.
  •  Pack foods with a high percentage of water like fruits and vegetables for snacks and lunch. To prevent cut fruit from browning, soak the fruit in cold salt water (1/2 teaspoon of salt per 1 quart of water) or lemon water (1 tablespoon of lemon juice per 1 cup of water) for 3 -5 minutes.
  • Freeze a reusable water bottle so your student has cold water by lunchtime.
  • Work with your school and PTA/PTO to make available cold water during lunch time, whether in large glass containers, or even a filtered drinking water cooler. Studies have shown students will choose water when it is cold and readily available.
  • Have water and fruits or vegetables ready for after school snacks.
  • Have a picky drinker? Try flavoring the water by adding fruit or switch out soda by adding sugarless flavor to sparkling water.
  • Make sure you drink plenty of water too! Kids are great mimickers – if they see you drinking water, they will too!
