The Sung Dynasty (960-1279) was the era when Confucianism became a powerful force of thought. Before this time, Buddhism was the dominant force in China. The center of the intellectual was the Buddhist temples. This evolved to the intellectual activity being on the scholar during the Sung Dynasty. The most important new scholar was Hu Yuan.
